Reindeer

1     Are reindeer Santa Claus's favorite animals? According to legend, on Christmas Eve every year, reindeer drive Santa Claus in his sleigh to give gifts to kids around the world.

2     Real reindeer live in very cold places near the Arctic. They have thick fur coats to fight off the bitter weather. They have sharp hooves to balance themselves on slippery ground and to dig out food buried deep under snow. They also have long, branched antlers to fight with each other. Unlike their other deer relatives, female reindeer have antlers just like the males do. Reindeer shed their old antlers and grow new ones ever year.

3     Reindeer are vegetarians. They feed on grasses, mosses, lichens, fungi, and birch and willow leaves. To make sure that they have a food supply all year round, reindeer must travel for thousands of miles each year. We call this "migration."
