Dolphins

1     Dolphins just might be the smartest animals living in the sea. Scientists have long impressed by dolphins' abilities. They communicate with other dolphins. They can solve problems and learn tasks. Many believe dolphins are at least as intelligent as primates.

2     Dolphins have sleek, streamlined body shapes that make them swift swimmers. Dolphins cruise in the ocean at a steady speed of 3 to 7 miles per hour. If they are in hot pursuit of schools of fish, they can swim at a top speed of about 25 miles per hour!

3     Related to whales, dolphins are marine mammals. There are 32 different species of dolphins living in oceans worldwide. Five species live in the rivers of South America and Asia. Most dolphins have long, beak-like snouts. A few of them (such as Risso's dolphins and Pacific Irrawaddy dolphins) have rounded heads like whales. The best known species are bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, and killer whales that we often see in open waters or aquariums. (Yes, killer whales are actually dolphins!)
