Sir Alexander Fleming
By Mary L. Bushong

1     From his beginnings on a small farm in a remote part of Scotland, Alexander Fleming went on to become a celebrated doctor and researcher in London, England. Partly through his discovery of penicillin, millions of lives were eventually saved.

2     Alexander Fleming was born in Scotland on August 6, 1881. He and his siblings enjoyed roaming the countryside around their farm as they grew up. He learned to observe the workings of the world around him. When Alexander was seven years old, his father died. When Alexander was about fourteen years old, he moved to London to live with his elder brother, Tom. Alexander worked as a shipping clerk for four years. Then an uncle died and left him some money. Alexander's brother Tom encouraged Alexander to use his inheritance to become a doctor.

3     Alexander Fleming chose St. Mary's Hospital Medical School and would later spend many years working there. At first, he planned to be a surgeon, but then he became interested in the study of bacteria.
