Abraham Lincoln History

Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, rose from very humble beginnings, having been born in a log cabin in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His family moved to Illinois in 1830, and the state is now known as "The Land of Lincoln." He was a lawyer and a congressman before being elected President of the United States in 1860. Civil War, America's deadliest war, broke out soon after his inauguration in March 1861. Through his tireless efforts, the Union was preserved. Abraham Lincoln was the first president assassinated when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. He is known as one of our greatest presidents.
