¹     If you have ever caught snowflakes and studied them, you probably wondered why most of them looked nothing like the paper snowflakes that you designed in art class. There are two reasons for this.
 
²     First of all, most snowflakes are a collection of snow crystals - anywhere from two to 200 snow crystals per snowflake! (Some snowflakes are made up of single crystals.) Furthermore, there are many different crystal shapes that make up snowflakes. One expert has identified and named more than 120 of them!
 
³     Some of the crystals are as follows:

• Needle - long and thin, the simplest type of crystal
• Column - a long, hollow, six-sided prism (There's that six again!)
• Plate - flat and thin like ...uh, plates, except shaped like a hexagon rather than a circle
• Column Capped with Plates - like an axle with a wheel on each end
• Dendrite - has a branching, tree-like form
• Six-Pointed Star - what most people think of as a snowflake
