Putting Rocks to Work
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Rocks are easy to find. They always have been! It is no surprise that people have put them to work! Rocks are used in many different ways by people all over the world.

2     Think of the buildings you see every day. Some of them were built with rock. Some floors are made of rock. A chimney or fireplace may be crafted of stones. You may also see rock walls and rock gardens. The largest rock wall in the world is the Great Wall of China. It is more than 13,000 miles long!

3     Rocks have been used as tools. Flint has been made into axes, spears, and arrowheads. Rocks have been used to make grindstones. People used to crush rock and mix it with liquid to make paint!
