The Butterfly's Visit
By Beth Beutler

1     "Spring must be coming!" Douglas commented. "Look outside. There's our first butterfly!" We were celebrating Douglas' birthday a few days early, and the butterfly's appearance was an extra special treat.

2     At our home in the country, we have several bird feeders and a wildlife feeder. We enjoy watching the birds and animals. We even have deer that come to our back yard. They are usually around all winter. But butterflies don't appear during the winter. That is why it was exciting to see the first one. Grandma commented that it was time to hang the hummingbird and butterfly feeders.

3     We could barely see the butterfly. It had settled on the front of our maroon Jeep and was slowly flapping its wings, and it seemed to blend in with the Jeep's colors. We watched the butterfly lift into the air and fly away. It had not stayed around for long, but it left an impression on us. The days have been wet, gray, and dreary lately. We tend to feel rather low when that happens. The sun poked out for the afternoon and lifted our spirits, and so did the visit of the butterfly.
