Easter - Historical and Religious Perspective
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Easter has become a celebration of springtime. In the USA, it is a holiday of flowers, chicks, and bunnies that hide colorful eggs and baskets of treats. It is a holiday that is also celebrated by various cultures around the world, each with their own traditions.

2     Strip away all the candy, eggs, and flowers from Easter, and you will uncover a religious holiday. Easter celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus, the founder of Christianity.

3     Jesus, also called Jesus Christ, was born a Jew around 2,000 years ago in the city of Bethlehem during the reign of the pagan Roman Empire. He grew up to become a carpenter. Sometime in his early 30's he left the carpentry trade and began to travel around Palestine, teaching and preaching about love, hope, and peace. He claimed to be the son of God. He developed a large following. The twelve men closest to him were called his disciples.
