¹     Bees buzz. Car engines roar. The washing machine rumbles. The radio plays a popular song. Sound is all around us. All sounds are produced by vibrations. An object vibrates, which creates a sound wave, which travels through a medium such as air until it reaches your ear.
 
²     The sound of a person talking is produced in the person's larynx (lar-ingks), which is in his or her throat. Stretched across the larynx are thin folds of tissue called vocal cords. Air from the person's lungs rushes through the slit between the vocal cords and begins the vibration.
 
³     Vibrations can also be started in other ways. Dolphins make vibrations to produce clicking and whistling sounds by using air filled pouches connected to the blowholes on top of their heads. Bees vibrate their wings to make a buzzing sound. Sound can also be produced by an action, such as a tree crashing down.
