Sense of Smell
By Sharon Fabian

1     You get off of the school bus, walk up your driveway, and come in your front door. Right away, you can tell that Mom has baked chocolate chip cookies for a special after-school treat. You can't see the cookies yet. You haven't asked Mom is she baked cookies. You can just tell. How? By your sense of smell.

2     Your sense of smell can tell you a lot of good things, especially at certain seasons of the year. Baking smells are one of the good things about the Christmas and Thanksgiving seasons. Smells can also tell you where you are. Do you think you could tell just by the smell whether you were in the mountains, by the ocean, or driving by a farm?

3     There are some smells that almost everyone likes, like flowers or chocolate chip cookies. There are some smells that some people like but others don't, such as garlic. Some people like the smell of grass that has just been mowed, but for other people it is a warning of something that they are allergic to.
