A Star-Spangled Performance, Part 1
By Beth Beutler

1     "Okay, group," Lenna said. "How are we going to tackle this project?"

2     Lenna was a natural leader, so after Miss Molford handed out the assignment and grouped the students, Lenna took charge. Lenna was never subtle! Sometimes she acted like the ruler of the class, but this time they didn't mind. When it came to schoolwork, Lenna usually did very well. Kids in her group usually got good grades, so they did not complain.

3     The project was for the members of the group to write and perform a short skit for the school pageant. It could be a comedy, tragedy, soliloquy, or documentary, as long as it was based on a prominent event. The group would be given thirty minutes three days per week for one month to work on the skit at school. They could also get together after school however often they liked. They were given a lot of freedom to design a five-to-ten-minute performance about a subject they had studied in history class.

4     "What do you all think?" Lenna prompted. She looked directly at Angela, who was preoccupied with her khaki outfit. "Well? Let's not drag this out!"
