Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Part 3
By Toni Lee Robinson

1     Robert thought about the last six years. How thrilled he'd been to join the New York Mets! He was the first hearing impaired player in baseball in many years. For a while, he'd lived a double life. He'd gone to college and played for the Mets farm team.

2     He had worked very hard. He'd overcome a great deal. He'd gotten his college degree. His baseball career had suffered, though. For four years he'd missed spring training. He'd also played only half of each season. Even though he'd worked extra hard, his batting average had gone down.

3     Robert knew he could play well. His stats just hadn't stacked up that way in the last few years. Now, the Mets no longer thought he was major league material. They had released him. It was a giant setback. Would he ever see his dream come true? Would he ever play major league baseball?

4     The next few years, Robert bounced around in the minors. Sometimes he had a hard time keeping his spirits up. He kept on plugging, though. He kept himself in tiptop shape. He worked tirelessly on his game skills.
