Phlebotomists
By Jennifer Kenny

1     There are numerous health care professionals. What ones can you think of? Perhaps a doctor, nurse, or therapist comes to mind. Can you think of an entry level health care professional? A phlebotomist is one. Do you wonder what that is?

2     Have you ever seen an adult donate blood at a blood drive? Did you ever visit someone at the hospital and see a person take some of their blood? Maybe you've gone to a laboratory with a parent when he or she needed a blood test. In any of these cases, you probably spotted a phlebotomist.

3     A phlebotomist is a person who collects a patient's blood for laboratory tests. This role requires a high school diploma and some additional training. There are one year programs at vocational schools which result in a diploma. There are also two year programs at community colleges which result in associate's degrees. Actual certification requirements vary from state to state. The salary varies greatly. Some earn a moderate income. Some only earn minimum wage. Most phlebotomists work regular hours, although those that work at hospitals may work weekends. There are part-time and full-time phlebotomists.
