Don't Drink and Drive
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Emily was a star athlete in ninth grade. She was traveling to a swimming competition on a Thursday afternoon with her parents and her younger sister. While her father drove them to the meet, a drunk driver crossed over the center line on the road into their lane and hit their car head on. Emily's mother was killed. Emily would never walk again due to the injuries she sustained. Her family would never be the same.

2     Max was a sixteen year old who attended a friend's party on a Saturday night. The friend's parents were not home, and beer was served. Max only had a couple of beers, and he claimed he felt fine. He offered to drive three friends home at the end of the party, and they accepted. Tragically, a few minutes later, all four were killed when Max misjudged the road and crashed into a tree.

3     Did you know that motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death among teens? Most of these are related to alcohol. Why? Alcohol impairs judgment and coordination. Reaction time is slowed. The eyes' ability to focus is affected. You become tired. This can all occur after even one drink! Thirty-nine percent of fatal motor vehicle accidents are alcohol-related.
