Pocahontas
By Jennifer Kenny

1     Ashley loved to watch Disney movies. She loved Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. She loved The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland, too. But her favorite of all time was Pocahontas! She watched that movie over and over.

2     Ashley was so excited! This week in school, they were learning about Native Americans. This would help her learn about the real-life Pocahontas. The movie made Pocahontas look older than she really was. Ashley wondered what else in the movie had been different in real life.

3     Pocahontas was born in 1595. Her real name was Matoaka. She never used that name outside her tribe. The Native Americans thought that would bring bad luck. Her nickname, Pocahontas, meant playful. Her father was called Powhatan. He was the chief in charge of 25 tribes in the land that we called Virginia.
