It's a Snap
By Brenda B. Covert

1     You see a fuzzy bee land on a big, deep pink flower. You see a vacant, rundown house that is covered in vines. You see a young mother studying her sweet baby's face. You see a basketball player leap for the perfect shot. You see an autumn mountain as colorful as a patchwork quilt. How do you capture the moment? By taking a snapshot!

2     In one way, taking pictures is easy. You hold up the camera, aim at the subject, and press the shutter button. Even a toddler could do that. In another way, taking pictures is not so easy. It involves careful planning. There are rules to follow if you hope to have some great photos.

3     The first rule is called "The Rule of Thirds." You see, there are two ways to shoot your subject. Most people just center the subject in the middle of the picture. However, that can become boring. A more interesting way to make pictures is to off-center the subject by using the rule of thirds. In your mind, divide the scene into three equal sections--like a tic-tac-toe grid. Your subject should take up two-thirds of the photo, either in a vertical or horizontal position. Instead of placing your subject in the center grid, you might place it at one of the four intersections that make up the corners of the central "box." This applies no matter how you are holding your camera.
