Is Trivia Useless?
By Phyllis Naegeli

1     Trivia, smivia. What does it matter? Isn't trivia just useless facts? Some may think so.

2     But trivia can be lots of fun. It's in books. It's in games. It's on the Internet. It's on TV. It even has its own holiday on January 4th. It may seem useless. But not all would agree.

3     The word "trivia" comes from Latin. "Tri-" means three. "Via" means road. When you put them together, the word means "the meeting place of three roads." In Rome, people thought these types of places were common. That's how our word "trivial" came to mean "of small importance."
