River Bank Mystery (Part 2/3)

1     Joe Harris is accused of killing Jackson Shaw by Ebenezer Tull. Adam Pope, the local lawman, has been questioning Joe at the Tull home, when Mrs. Shaw arrives and screams at Joe.
 
2     "Mrs. Shaw!" said Pope firmly. "You will control yourself. We do not know for certain who killed your husband, but I will do my best to find out. Until guilt has been established, you will refrain from making any accusations. Do you understand me?"
 
3     Juliet Shaw's dark eyes burned with anger at Joe, but she nodded her head.
 
4     "Good," said Pope. "I will need to talk with you, Tull, but I want to see the body. Then you can take it back to the farm with you in your wagon, Mrs. Shaw."
 
5     The dead farmer's wife nodded. Much of her anger was now spent from that one violent outburst, leaving her emotions drained. Tears streaked silently across her cheeks as she followed the men out to the barn.
 
6     As lawman, it was Pope's job to get what clues he could from the body. He loosened the ropes that held the canvas tarp close to the body and turned it down.
 
7     Surprise was the only expression on the dead man's face. Pope noted that the man's head still turned easily as he moved it to check the wound on the back. Blood matted Shaw's hair, but there appeared to be something else there as well.
 
8     "Bring me a lamp, please," he spoke over his shoulder to Tull.
 
9     The farmer returned a few minutes later with an oil lamp, and Pope thrust it close to the wound. A few small clumps of dirt clung to the hairs, cemented in place by the drying blood.
