Blind Shots
By Brenda B. Covert

1     You've probably heard of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. Both were blind singers and musicians. You have probably heard of Helen Keller, the famous American speaker and writer who was both blind and deaf. You may have heard of Louis Braille, a teacher and inventor of the Braille writing system with which those who are blind can read with their fingers. Have you ever heard of Henry Butler, the blind photographer?

2     It's no joke. Henry Butler, a blues pianist, is also a photo artist. He cannot see the things he shoots. His other senses help him aim and snap the pictures. The photos sell for $325 to $800 in an art gallery!

3     Butler began this odd hobby in 1984. At that time, he already had a career in music. Sometimes, friends would take him to art exhibits and describe the artwork to him. It left him feeling dissatisfied. He decided to become a shutterbug. He could feel objects and take snapshots. Then, his friends would look at his photos and describe them. He learned more about the art of photography. His desire to capture objects and feelings on film is similar to what a sighted photographer feels. It made him feel connected to art.
