Get Involved - Fighting Crime in Schools
By Phyllis Naegeli

The dark-haired boy with the baseball cap sat on the steps of his school and rubbed his hands on his jeans. He sullenly watched the police car pull away with its lights flashing. His friend, Brad, plopped his bulging, worn backpack down on the brick steps and sat down.

     "Hey," said Fernando.

Brad ran his fingers through his curly red hair. "Hey," he replied softly.

The boys sat quietly for a few minutes as a crowd of kids dispersed. A small group of girls gathered in a circle with their arms folded across their chests.

"Looks like they're as tired of this as I am," said Fernando, pointing to the group of girls.

"Yeah, I'm tired of it too," said Brad. "I wish there was something we could do. But, we're just kids."

Fernando picked up a small twig and began snapping it into pieces. "There has to be something."

Just then, a tall, lanky man dressed in blue jeans and a striped polo shirt walked out of the school. He walked down the steps and turned to face the boys.

"Hey, Mr. Lars," said Fernando. "Are you heading home?"
