Pisacane's Propaganda
By Brenda B. Covert

1     Carlo Pisacane was an Italian revolutionary in the 19th century. Born to a noble family in Naples, he rejected his inherited title of Duke of San Giovanni. The path he chose led him to death before age 40. He is known for spreading his idea of "propaganda by deed." He was what we would call a terrorist.

2     Pisacane chose to serve in several different armies during his twenties and thirties. Terrorists crave power, knowing that power will result in political change. The military is a symbol of a nation's power, and perhaps that is what drew Pisacane to it.

3     The goal of terrorism is to come quickly into political power in order to affect change. Threats and violence are a terrorist's tools for reaching that goal. Pisacane was all for violence. He believed it to be more effective than the pamphlets, posters, and assemblies favored by peaceful protesters.
