Giving Back to Your Neighborhood
By Tammy Scarbrough

1     "Help take a bite out of crime!" Have you heard that saying before? If so, then you are probably aware of McGruff®, the National Crime Prevention Council's mascot. McGruff, the crime dog, has been around since 1980; helping to teach citizens how important it is to get involved in their neighborhoods. The National Crime Prevention Center has many programs in which citizens can get involved.

2     One of the ways in which citizens can help is to know their neighbors. There is no way that a citizen would know that someone did not belong at their next-door neighbor's house unless they knew that neighbor well enough to know who is allowed at their house. Also, when you have a neighbor that is going out of town, it is always nice to have someone on the block keeping an eye on their house while they're gone to make sure nothing happens to it.

3     Another way in which citizens help is to have a McGruff® House. What is that? This would be a home that is open to children in case they get hurt, are lost, or feel that they are in danger. The people of this home would help watch the neighborhood children as they go to school and come home. They also report any suspicious behavior to the police department in their town. You would know this house because it would have a sticker in one of its front windows with a picture of McGruff® and the words "McGruff® House." Think of these people as the "watchdogs" of the block. They are there to protect the children of their neighborhood.
