Texas Rangers
By Tammy Scarbrough

1     Have you heard of the Texas Rangers? You are probably thinking of baseball, but these Rangers don't carry a bat; they carry a gun!

2     When people first started making their homes in Texas, there was no one there to protect them. Stephen F. Austin decided to organize a group of citizens to provide that protection. In 1823, Austin called this group the Rangers because they were called to range over a big area. You see, Texas was its own country at that time. It would not become a part of the United States until several years later.

3     The Texas Rangers were given the task of protecting the land and people from the Indians that caused problems in their country. For defending the people of their country, they received $1.25 per day and were required to be a Ranger for one year. While the Rangers were protecting Texas from the Indians, Sam Houston and his army were protecting Texas from Santa Anna and his troops. During the War with Mexico, the Rangers were so effective that the Mexicans called them the "Los Diablos Tejanos," which means the Texas devils.
