Jake and Jackie Learn to Respect Authority
By Beth Beutler

Jake and Jackie slumped in their seats. This was the third time this week that the principal had called the entire student body together to "talk." There had been several items stolen from other students in the past two weeks, and Mr. Green was getting tired of it.

Jake whispered to Jackie. "I am tired of these assemblies."

     "Me, too!" Jackie whispered back.

Ms. Johnson, their teacher, looked at Jake and Jackie sharply. Jake and Jackie slumped further in their seats. Ms. Johnson motioned for them to sit up. Jake and Jackie sighed and sat up straighter. Jackie quickly rolled her eyes at Jake, quietly making fun of Ms. Johnson. Throughout the assembly, they made gestures and faces and tried not to laugh. Finally, after what seemed like hours, the principal dismissed the students.

"I'm glad that's finally over!" Jake said.

"Me too! I thought he'd never stop!" Jackie replied.

As they walked back to class, their favorite teacher, Mr. Mullen, spoke to them. "Hi, Jake and Jackie. How are you today?"

     "Great!" they replied.

"I wondered if I might speak to both of you after school?" asked Mr. Mullen.

Jake and Jackie looked at each other. "Sure, I guess so."

"Great. I'll see you in my classroom after the bell rings."
