Knowing What to Look Up
By Patti Hutchison

"Can you help me?" Katie asked the librarian. "I need to write a report on a career I would like."

"Sure," the librarian said cheerfully. "What career are you thinking about?"

"I'm thinking about being a hairdresser," Katie said.

"Well," the librarian said, "where would you like to start?"

"I'm not really sure," Katie said.

"What kinds of things do you have to tell about your career?" the librarian asked.

"I need to tell how much money they make, what training they need to have, and what kinds of work they do. I also need to tell if there are any other careers like this one that I might like," said Katie.

The librarian handed Katie a large book. It was called The Big Book of Careers. "Let's look in here," she said. "We can start with the index."
