Loading the Dishwasher
By Cathy Pearl

1     A dishwasher is a great time saver if you have one. It takes a lot less time to load a dishwasher than it does to wash the dishes by hand. But if you load it the wrong way, the dishes won't come clean. You will still have to wash them by hand, which means twice as much work. Here are some tips to get those dishes clean in the dishwasher.

2     Some people rinse dishes before they load them in the dishwasher. Others do not rinse them first. Which is better? It depends on whom you ask. One thing you need to do is rinse the large pieces of food off the dishes. Large pieces can clog the dishwasher.

3     Glasses and plastic should go on the top rack of the dishwasher. Glasses are more likely to break if you put them on the bottom rack. Plastics should also not go on the bottom rack. The water is hotter there, and the plastics can melt.

4     Plates, bowls, pots, or anything that needs to be cleaned with a little more power can go on the bottom rack. Sometimes the water pressure is different between the top and bottom racks. That's why the glasses are on the top. You need less pressure to wash a glass. You need more water pressure to wash a plate that has dried food on it.

5     Of course, silverware goes in the holder. Sometimes these holders are in the bottom rack or sometimes they are on the door of the dishwasher. Some people sort the silverware before putting it in the holder. Spoons, knives, and forks are all separate. Others just put the silverware in without sorting it first. How you do it is entirely up to you.
