Carpentry
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Carpenters build and repair things made from wood and other materials. They may build concrete forms, frameworks, houses, or kitchen cabinets. Some carpenters learn all the jobs in building a house. Some learn only one or two jobs like putting in doors and windows. Some learn to build just one thing. They may build stairs. They may put in doors and windows. They are specialty carpenters.

2     Each job is different. There is one way they are all alike. There are three basic steps for each job. First, carpenters make a layout. They work from blueprints or instructions. They measure, mark, and arrange materials. They cut and shape the materials. They use hand and power tools. Some tools they use are chisels, planes, saws, and drills.

3     The second step is joining the materials. Carpenters use nails, screws, staples, or glues for this work.
