Jake and Jackie Learn to Use the Library
By Beth Beutler

"Where am I going to find this information?" Jake wondered. His teacher had given him a task to find out about submarines. She said that he could not use the Internet. She wanted him to use the library.

He told Jackie about it as they sat on a bench during recess. They were snacking on cheese and grapes.

"I'm used to finding everything I need on the Internet," he said. "I hardly ever go to the library!"

"I don't, either," Jackie said. "Could we go together on Saturday? I have a report to write, too. Mine is about travel in the 1800s."

Both their moms said yes. On Saturday morning, Jake's mom picked up Jackie, and they headed to the local library. They parked near the door. When they walked in, it was very quiet. Jake's mom quickly turned her cell phone to vibrate. She whispered to Jake and Jackie, "I almost got in trouble here one day when my cell phone rang. I tried to talk quietly, but the librarian came up to me and gave me a card. The card said 'No cell phones, please'!"

Jake and Jackie chuckled quietly about the idea of Jake's mom getting in trouble.

Jake's mom led them to a big desk. A woman stood behind the desk, using a computer keyboard. "Hello! May I help you?" she asked.

Jake's mom replied. "Yes. My son and his friend have schoolwork that requires them to find information without using the Internet. This is their first time in a library to do research. Can you help them?"
