Jake and Jackie Learn Some Musical Terms, Part 1
By Beth Beutler

"Concertos, arias, intervals - how am I ever going to remember all this?" Jackie muttered as she carried her violin case to the car.

Jake caught up with her. He was carrying his trumpet case. Both Jake and Jackie were involved in an after-school music program. Jackie took violin lessons, Jake took trumpet lessons, and both took a music appreciation course. Today's lesson had been on some musical terms that related to classical music.

"What are you muttering about?" Jake asked.

"I'm trying to remember all the words we learned today," Jackie replied.

"Why? There won't be a test." Jake tended to be practical about things. When it came to learning, he mostly focused on tasks he would be graded on. Jackie liked to remember all the new things she learned. It didn't matter to her whether there would be a grade.

Jackie rolled her eyes at Jake. "I just want to remember, that's all."

"Well, let's practice. We learned ten terms today. Remember that the teacher said they were the start of her ABC's of classical music."

"That's right," Jackie said. "A was for aria, which is a song in an opera. Baroque is a dramatic style of art and music that was common in the 1600 and early 1700s that featured many decorative parts and details. Concerto is a piece of music for one instrument or one small group of instruments within an orchestra. What was D?"
