Alexander Graham Bell
By Sharon Fabian

1     Alexander Graham Bell was one of the very early pioneers in the field of telecommunications.

2     Telecommunications means communicating over a long distance. It may involve sending messages over wires, or it may involve satellites or other forms of wireless communication. It may even involve waving signal flags like the lifeguards do at the beach. Any method of sending a message an extra-long distance can be called telecommunication.

3     When Alexander Graham Bell was growing up in the 1800s, telecommunication was not an everyday thing as it is today. Families did not have TVs and phones in their homes. Schools did not have public address systems for morning announcements. Business was not conducted over the Internet.

4     The telegraph had been invented, and people could send an important message by telegraph using Morse code. However, only one message could be sent at a time with these early telegraphs. Alexander Graham Bell and several other people who liked to experiment thought that a telegraph which could send more than one message at a time would be a big improvement. They were competing to invent a machine that could send several messages at once.
