The Midwest
By Kathleen W. Redman

1     Would you like to spend some time losing your breath on some of America's fastest and highest rides? Or would you rather spend your time enjoying museums and big cities? You can do both things in the region of the United States called the Midwest.

2     Most reference books include twelve states in the Midwest: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. The geographic center of the United States (not including Alaska and Hawaii) is in the Midwest. The population center of the United States is also there.

3     Most parts of the Midwest are flat. Prairies cover most of the states in the Midwest west of the Mississippi River. There is less and less rainfall from east to west, so there are different kinds of prairies. Tall grass prairies grow in the wetter eastern region. Short grass prairies are more common near the Rocky Mountains.
