Red Cloud: A Leader in War and Peace
By Sharon Fabian

1     Some great leaders conquer their enemy and win the war. Other great leaders negotiate and make peaceful agreements. Red Cloud did both.

2     Red Cloud was member of the Lakota Sioux. When he was growing up, he learned to ride a horse, hunt buffalo, and fight. He became skilled at all of these activities.

3     He learned about the problems between his people and the white settlers too. Settlers had been allowed to establish the Bozeman Trail through the Sioux buffalo hunting territory, but then the settlers had gone on to build forts along the trail. There were soon problems between the Sioux and the white settlers.

4     Agreements between the two groups were not kept. More and more settlers came west as they heard tales of discoveries of gold. More troops arrived at the forts to protect the settlers. Some people suggested that the Indians should be eliminated from the lands around the Bozeman Trail. One of the leaders at Fort Kearny, Captain William Fetterman, bragged that he could defeat the Sioux with 80 soldiers.
