Secret Service Agent
By Phyllis Naegeli

1     As the president takes his morning jog, a "protective bubble" accompanies him. This is what the Secret Service calls the men who form a 360-degree barrier around our president. However, this is not the original job of the U.S. Secret Service. Initially, the service was formed to track down forgers and counterfeiters. It wasn't until 1901, after William McKinley became the third president in thirty-seven years to be assassinated, that Congress added the job of protecting the president to its role.

2     Today, the U.S. Secret Service protects the president, the vice president, and their families. When foreign dignitaries visit the United States, their safety is assigned to the Secret Service. Former presidents, vice presidents, their families, and major presidential candidates also have the protection of the Secret Service. Agents who are assigned to these protective jobs are willing to give their lives to safeguard those they shield. One agent was killed while protecting President Harry S. Truman. Others have been wounded in the line of duty. An agent was shot while protecting President Ronald Reagan. Although rare, a Secret Service agent must always be ready to defend those he guards.

3     When the president travels, the Secret Service sends agents ahead to begin the work of protecting the president. They look over the location and check all areas where the president will be. They do background checks on people who will come in contact with the president. Secret Service agents are very busy protecting our president.
