Serbia
By Sharon Fabian

1     What do you know about Serbia? Do you know where it is located? Do you know about important events in its history? Have you heard about Serbia anywhere else besides in history class? When has it been in the news? What might tourists go to visit in Serbia?

2     The Republic of Serbia is a small country, about 88,000 square kilometers, located on the Balkan Peninsula in Europe. It lies south of Hungary, north of Albania and Macedonia, east of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and west of Romania. Serbia's location made it an important country throughout history because it is located on a main route linking Europe and Asia.

3     The northern part of Serbia is flat land, something like the Great Plains in the United States. The center and the southern parts are more mountainous, like the east and west coasts of our country.

4     The majority of the people in Serbia are Serbs, and Serbian is the official language, but there are also people representing over 30 other nationalities. In 2012, about seven million people lived in Serbia.

5     Belgrade is the capital and the largest city. Serbia is a parliamentary republic. It has a constitution just as the United States does.
