Afghanistan
By Sharon Fabian

1     Although the Cold War never involved direct battles between the United States and the Soviet Union, the conflict was fought indirectly in a number of smaller countries. In the 1950s, it was fought in Korea. In the 1960s, it was fought in Vietnam. In the 1970s, the conflict was fought in Afghanistan.

2     Afghanistan is a rugged country of steep mountains and flat plains. It is a little smaller than the state of Texas and is home to about 25 million people. It is located between Turkmenistan and Pakistan.

3     Afghanistan has frequently been a battleground as a result of foreign invasions. Unrest and civil war have plagued the country at various times throughout its history.

4     The year 1979 was one of those times. The government had changed hands once again, and the communists, who had been in control of the country, were in danger of losing control. The Soviet Union decided to invade Afghanistan to keep the communists in power.

5     On December 25, 1979, Soviet troops entered Afghanistan. They stormed the royal palace and killed the leader. They installed Babrak Karmal as the new leader.
