Freedom of Religion
By Sharon Fabian

1     It was a time of changes. Some people wanted changes in their church. Others tried to start new churches. In England, that was not allowed. There could only be one church. It was the Church of England. The law said that everyone must belong.

2     Many church groups moved to America. They packed their things. Then they boarded ships. For two months, they sailed. They all hoped for freedom of religion.

3     One group was the Puritans. Another was the Quakers. Keep reading to learn about these two groups.

4
Puritans

5     They began in Europe. They were unhappy with the Church of England. Some chose to start a new life. They sailed for America.

6     Some settled in Plymouth. Some settled nearby. They built small towns. In their towns, everyone had the same beliefs. They ran their own towns. They made their own rules. They made laws about religion. Everyone had to obey the laws.

7     The laws said what people could not do. Swearing was not allowed. People could not drink alcohol. People could not gamble. People could not wear flashy clothes.

8     The laws also said what people must do. Everyone must attend Sunday service.

9     Sunday service was simple but long. It might take most of the day. At Sunday service, everyone read the Bible. They listened to sermons for hours.
