Leaders in the Executive Branch
By Sharon Fabian

1     The executive branch includes the president, the cabinet departments, and other executive agencies. Many famous African-Americans have served our country in the executive branch.

2     The first African-American president, Barack Obama, was elected in 2008. Before he was elected, several African-Americans campaigned for the office of president.

3     In 1972, Shirley Chisholm ran for president. She was the first black congresswoman in the House of Representatives. She was known for speaking out against the Vietnam War and for advocating for the poor in America's cities. Although she was not elected president, she led the way for later African-American candidates.
