Keys to Success
By Sharon Fabian

1     It was so important that many black people considered it the key to success. People provided room in their houses so that it could be achieved. Qualified persons were hunted to do the job. People gave money out of their own pockets to buy materials.

2     What was this key to success that African-Americans held so important in the years after the Civil War? What was it that they believed would allow them to get well-paying jobs? What did they think was needed for their children to be a success?

3     It was education. To many former slaves, education was seen as the key to success! That is why they found ways to provide teachers and schools even though their means were very limited.

4     Some local schools for blacks had already begun, even before the Civil War. Free African-Americans who had gained an education came back to their homes to teach others. Often, parents provided a place for the teacher to live with a family. School rooms and supplies were needed, too. With emancipation, the demand for schools grew and grew.
