The Wampanoag

1     The Native Americans who celebrated the first Thanksgiving feast with the Pilgrims were the Wampanoag (WOMP-ah-NO-agg). Their name meant "people of the morning light."
 
2     These people spent the spring and summer near the shore. Their homes were wooden frames covered in reed mats. When the summer was over, they removed the mats and packed everything up. Then they moved to the winter camps away from the water in the shelter of the forests.
 
3     In the summer they grew corn, beans, and squash. They also gathered berries and nuts. The Wampanoag were very good fishermen, too.
 
4     When the first white men came to the Americas, there were as many as 25,000 Wampanoag living in the Massachusetts area. They had their own laws and were led by a chief and his council. They did not just farm, hunt, and fish. They traded with other native nations and later also with white men.
