¹     The Seminoles lived in Florida. They were not like other tribes. They did not start out with that name. Once there were many tribes in Florida. White men came, and the natives got sick. Many of the Indians died. Some of those who lived joined new tribes. They became Seminoles.
 
²     No one knows for sure where their name comes from. Some think it is a Creek name meaning "runaway." Some think it is a Spanish name meaning "wild."
 
³     Why would people have a name like that? There is a reason. Many Seminoles were Creeks who moved south. They took in runaway slaves. Many slaves became part of the tribe. The Seminoles also did not want to do what the white man wanted.
 
⁴     The Seminoles lived in Florida where it could get very hot. Their homes were made with poles at the corners and had no walls. The roof was made of thatch. This way the home could stay cool.
