The Empire State Building
By Jane Runyon

1     What is the tallest building in the world? For forty-one years, you could have found the world's tallest building in New York City, New York. The Empire State Building proudly held that title. It is no longer the world's tallest building, but it again is the tallest building in New York. The people of New York would rather not think about how it regained that title.

2     Ground was broken for construction of this giant skyscraper in January 1930. The land had once been the site of the Waldorf Hotel. The richest of the rich made the Waldorf THE social spot of the city. Construction of the Empire State Building provided jobs for 3,400 workers. Many of these workers were immigrants to the United States. They were looking for any jobs they could get to provide homes for their families. Hundreds of the workers were members of the Mohawk Indian tribe. The Mohawks were known for their agility and courage in working on steel beams far above the city below.

3     Construction on the Empire State Building was completed the following year. President Herbert Hoover officially opened the building on May 1, 1931. Construction had taken only 410 days.
