Tuscarora
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1     The Tuscarora people of North Carolina lived along the coastal side of the state. They were loosely divided into two groups of people: the northern and southern. The northern people were led by Chief Tom Blunt. The southern group was led by Chief Hancock.

2     The European settlers first arrived in Tuscarora territory in 1653. For about fifty years, they lived peacefully together. In 1710, a large group of German and Swiss colonists arrived. They began building on the former site of a Tuscarora village that they were told was abandoned. This was not exactly true. The Surveyor-General, John Lawson, told them the land had been paid for. He'd made the people move, but they were very unhappy about it.

3     The German leader, von Graffenried, went with Lawson on a scouting trip shortly after this. They were captured by Chief Hancock's warriors and taken prisoner. Lawson was executed, and Graffenried was held captive.
