Who Named This Place?

1     Hispanic people have helped this country grow. But that is not all they did. Their language helped change this country. They also named many of the towns, cities, and states that we live in. The names have meanings.
 
2     The state of Colorado has a Spanish meaning. Congress picked the name in 1861. It translates to "colored" in English. It is often said to mean reddish in color. Colorado has a lot of Hispanic people living there. Only five states have more.
 
3     In 1861, the Nevada territory and the Utah territory became separate. Nevada's name was shortened from Sierra Nevada, which means snowy range. As many of you know, it doesn't snow in all of Nevada. Parts of the state stay very warm even in the winter.
