A Whacky Good Time with Piñatas

1     You don't usually get a treat when you hit something. In fact, you might get into trouble instead! One popular party activity encourages hitting, though. Whack! When you hit a piñata, everybody has a chance to get some goodies.
 
2     You may have recently seen a piñata at a birthday party, but piñatas have been around for hundreds of years to celebrate special occasions. A piñata is usually a cardboard animal covered with pieces of brightly colored tissue paper. It is filled with candy, money, and small toys. Modern piñatas can also come in many shapes and sizes. Some look like animals, while others are in the shape of cartoon characters.
 
3     In case you have never had a chance to try this whacky activity, this is how it works. The host hangs the piñata by a rope from a hook in the ceiling. One guest is blindfolded and given a wooden bat or stick. He or she has three chances to break the piñata open, and then it is another person's turn. When the piñata breaks, everyone grabs the colorful treats as they scatter across the floor.
