The Ute Wars
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1     The Utes were a First Nations tribe that lived in the Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico areas of the American West. They were a proud and independent people.

2     Life was hard for the Ute until the Spanish came. Their territory covered a lot of rough, rocky land. Hunting was not always good, and hunger was always lurking nearby.

3     When the Spanish came, they dealt with the Pueblo people first. Soon the Pueblo people were trading Spanish goods to other tribes.

4     The Navajo and Apache stole horses first. They immediately recognized the benefits of having horses. When the Utes could, they bought horses. The price was dear though, and sometimes included a child in the bargain. Later, they would also take the animals in raids.
