¹     Some people believe her heart was even bigger than her entire body. She was small in stature. But she gave more of herself than anyone thought possible. She was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 27, 1910. Her parents were Albanian. The town she was born in, Skopje, was in the Ottoman Empire. Today that area is called Macedonia.
 
²     When Agnes was 18, she left home. She had decided to dedicate her life to the Catholic Church and become a nun. She joined the Sisters of Loretto. It is there that she took the name Sister Teresa. From the very beginning, Sister Teresa wanted to help the poor and needy people that she found around her.
 
³     In 1950, Teresa asked permission from the Vatican in Rome to start her own group of sisters. Their mission would be to care for "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." Her group would be known as Missionaries of Charity. She and twelve other sisters took the poor in Calcutta, India, as their personal mission. As the leader of this group of nuns, Sister Teresa now became known as Mother Teresa.
