Mechanical Engineer
By Cindy Grigg

1     Mechanical engineering is the science of machines and the production of power. Mechanical engineers use science from many fields. They must know about physics, or the science that studies forces, energy, and motion. They design and maintain machines and mechanical systems.

2     These engineers do many things. Some design machines for manufacturing. These machines make things. For example, many machines used to build cars were designed by mechanical engineers. Some mechanical engineers design machines to get power from energy sources. Some may be small, like a car engine. Some may be big, like the machines in a power plant.

3     There are many kinds of energy. Solar energy comes from the sun. Oil deposits in the ground give us oil and gasoline that are used for energy sources. Atomic energy comes from the energy found inside tiny little atoms. We can't use these sources of energy as they occur in nature. For example, a car can't run on solar energy just by letting the sun shine on it. Most of the time we must convert energy from one form into another before it can do work.
