Biomedical Engineer
By Cindy Grigg

1     Sometimes a patient's diseased organ has to be replaced. Not all transplanted organs come from human donors. Some are synthetic, or artificial. Synthetic organs are made from materials called biomaterials. These can be types of plastics, metals, or ceramics. One type of synthetic organ is an artificial heart. Other uses of biomaterials are in heart valves, hip joints, and many kinds of dental devices.

2     The people who create synthetic organs are called biomedical engineers. They work with scientists and doctors to design and make synthetic organs that will work well inside a patient's body. By combining biology and medicine with engineering, biomedical engineers develop devices and procedures that solve medical and health-related problems.

3     To design a successful synthetic organ, a biomedical engineer must first consider what organ the synthetic one will replace. That means thinking about the hardness and strength of the biomaterial to be used. The device must be designed to last for a long time.
