1     Waves and tides move ocean water toward and away from the shore. But ocean water moves in other ways, also. Down below the surface, the water moves in streams called currents.
 
2     Some currents are like rivers in the ocean. They can be thousands of kilometers long. In fact, the largest ocean currents would make the Mississippi River look like a small stream.
 
3     There are two types of currents, surface currents and deep currents. Surface currents are caused by wind patterns. They are usually several hundred meters deep. They can be warm or cold-water currents, depending on where they come from.
