The Dreams of Heroes (part 3)

1     Ray was smiling so big his face had crinkled into a million brown furrows. "When you gonna learn, Brother? I'm always right," he said. He laughed like a kid and cuffed the younger man on the shoulder. "You see the whole thing, then?"
 
2     Dad nodded. "Most of it, anyway. It was quite an experience. Gave me a new outlook on several things."
 
3     "How'd you come to be here, Otis?" Ray asked.
 
4     "I just kept imagining what could happen at this thing," Dad said. "I got more and more worried." He put an arm on Jace's shoulder. "I was afraid you might get hurt. I was coming to bring you back home."
 
5     "You drove all the way here for that?" Jace asked. "What about work?"
 
6     "Work can wait," Dad said simply. "You're what's important to me. As a matter of fact, I took some time off. How'd you like to take a little trip?"
 
7     Whoa! Jace thought. Is this the same guy who banged his fist on the table a day ago?
 
8     A look of pain crossed Dad's face. "I'm so sorry, Son. You've taken the brunt of things the last few years. That's what our trip is about-healing some wounds and closing some doors."
 
9     The next morning Uncle Ray smiled and waved as Jace and his father pulled away. They drove with the windows cranked down and the wind in their faces. Jace had always dreamed of traveling. Being here with Dad was better than his dreams. He felt light and free as the wind. "Where we going, anyway?" he asked.
 
10     "Alabama," his father replied. Jace stared at him. What was going on? For an instant, Jace thought maybe Dad had a split personality, like he'd seen in the movies.
